Website Evaluation

The website that I have chosen to evaluate is Ashton Sixth Form’s student website. The website, like Salford University’s website, is aimed as current students and perspective students. The purpose of the site is to allow current students to access their files and emails from home, as well as for perspective students to find out more about the Ashton Sixth Form life, and also to view some of the courses they may wish to take up on arrival at the College.

The first thing that strikes me about the website as soon as you go onto it is the busy number of differing activities that are available to click on and look at. Now this can be seen as a strength or a weakness of the site, but in my opinion for a home page the blocks are too closely compacted together and therefore it is a weakness. They seem to have just been clumped all together without consideration of spacing of the rest of the site.

The site is very accessible, as soon as you scroll over the links at the top of the page the list of each different other pages within the site come down and you can click over what you want. Also to do with this point if you do not wish to use that feature, at the bottom of the page is the same options, but each of the pages is written individually.

A second strength that I identified is that all of the links work on the site. As soon as you click on each one of the individual links then immediately you are taken onto thecorresponding page that is linked to the title. On the site there is over 68 quick links that as I said earlier are easily accessible.

A third strength that I found with this site is that there is a lot of information for students who are already on courses at Ashton Sixth Form, but also there is a lot of helpful information for all of the perspective students who wish to attend the college in the future.

The first task I attempted to do is to look at the student intranet, this is where the students can look through all of the courses that there is at college. The problem that I found with the intranet was that if you are not a current student you cannot access the full range of activities because you need a valid password. However you can have a scroll through of what courses there are at the college.

The second task I looked at attempting was accessing the ashton6fc twitter page. I followed the link button on the side of the home page to access Ashton sixth form’s twitter page. I had a good read through of all the posts that they had submitted and it was very good knowing there is a way of keeping up with my old college’s activities on a micro blogging site.
